Social Media & Communications Intern

Birdhouse Farmers Market and Community Garden is looking for an enthusiastic student with a passion for communications, social media, and public engagement to join us for an unpaid internship this season. Birdhouse Farmers Market is happy to work with students who are seeking credit for internship work completed in our programs. The intern position will support BFM staff with communications, marketing, social media content development, and customer engagement throughout the duration of the internship. This internship is open to all majors, but priority will go to marketing and communications majors. 

Reporting to BFM Staff, the intern will assist with maintaining BFM’s online presence via our website and social media channels as well as other marketing related tasks. Tasks include, but are not limited to, planning and creating content for the website and social media channels, creating fun and engaging social media campaigns to engage more customers and expand BFM’s reach, writing and sending our twice weekly newsletter, and brainstorming and implementing marketing campaigns to reach the Randolph and lower-fan neighborhoods. The intern will work closely with BFM staff in order to stay informed about all of the programs, activities, and announcements needing to go out for BFM on a weekly basis. Interns will also have the opportunity to complete an independent research project that aligns with the BFM internship program and the student’s current field of study. 

Interns may work up to 15 hours per week at most. Students must maintain a consistent weekly schedule, but can create their weekly schedule around class meeting times and other commitments. 

Responsibilities:

  • Create and post content on BFM social media platforms

    • Create engaging posts, stories, reels, etc. 

    • Come up with and post different series (food education, dogs of the market, flowers of the market, garden education, etc.) 

  • Respond to DMs and messages, referring to BFM staff for clarification when necessary

  • Respond to and engage with followers who comment, like, and share

  • Repost vendor and customer stories, posts, etc. 

  • Write the (twice) weekly newsletter

  • Sit in on weekly meetings with BFM staff to ensure they are up to date on all things BFM

  • Attend the market to gather pictures for BFM social media content 

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • A passion for community and food systems 

  • An interest in community engagement, public outreach, and marketing

  • Ability to maintain professionalism across multiple fields (in-person, online, etc)

  • Knowledge and/or experience with some or all of the following:

    • Graphic Design (BFM will provide interns with access to CANVA Premium. Interns may use other programs that they have access to if necessary)

    • Social media engagement/management

    • Website design

    • Content creation

    • Technical writing skills

  • Willingness to learn new skills and information related to the position’s responsibilities

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

  • Excellent organizational skills 

Learning Objectives:

  • Intern will create, organize, and send twice weekly email campaigns via MailChimp to Birdhouse Farmers Market customers and supporters. 

  • Intern will create and post a variety of content (including but not limited to: grid posts, reels, stories, threads, etc.) across Birdhouse Farmers Market’s social media platforms (Instagram and Facebook) with guidance and oversight from BFM Staff. 

  • Intern will gain skills in website editing and management through the use of Squarespace. 

Time Requirement: 5-15 hours per week expected. Intern will complete some tasks from home, others will be onsite at the market and garden (gathering images for social media, interviewing customers, etc.)

Compensation: This is an unpaid internship opportunity. Birdhouse Farmers Market is happy to work with students seeking credit for an internship opportunity. Arrangements for receiving college credit must be made by the student interested in receiving credit.
