The Birdhouse mission is to create a nourished and united Richmond by growing community connections and fighting food insecurity through education, neighborhood outreach, and a commitment to local agriculture.

Birdhouse is the hub of a food-based ecosystem designed to feed, educate, empower, and improve the health and well-being of the Richmond community.

The market offers the best in local vegetables, fruit, meat, eggs, dairy, baked goods, and specialty food products. Being a friendly, open-air, all-weather, mid-week, food-focused, SNAP-accepting market is central to our organization, but not our only activity. We operate a year-round, online farmers market to accommodate customer’s needs and schedules. We also provide hands-on education and outreach through the Birdhouse Community Garden, a green space adjacent to the market area where everyone is welcome to learn about native plants, sustainable gardening, composting, healthy eating and cooking. Our relationships with neighborhood food pantries allow the pantries to make direct, grant-funded food purchases from our local farmers so that high quality, fresh, local foods go directly to our most vulnerable families.

Programs & Services

SNAP/EBT is accepted at Birdhouse with the Virginia Fresh Match Program doubling every SNAP dollar spent. SNAP and SNAP Match can be used in-person and online.

Composting In partnership with NOPE, community members can compost food scraps in the bins next to the brick gazebo in the Birdhouse Community Garden.

Birdhouse Community Garden The garden is open year-round for all to enjoy. Follow the signage to identify our many plants, harvest fresh food, pull weeds, sit and relax.

Gleaning the Market Every week our vendors generously provide the Second Baptist Church Food Pantry with bread, produce, eggs and other goods for their Wednesday morning food pantry.
